Over a million lives have been affected by the predictive analytics research led by Dr. Rothman
CHARLOTTE, N.C.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#AMIA–PeraHealth Co-founder and Chief Science Officer, Michael Rothman, has been awarded the designation of Fellow of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). This prestigious peer-awarded achievement recognizes professionals who apply informatics skills and knowledge towards the goals of enhanced personal and population health, improved organizational performance and learning, and individual empowerment in their health, care, and research.
The formal fellowship induction ceremony will be held at the AMIA 2021 Virtual Clinical Informatics Conference May 18-20.
Dr. Rothman is active in both research and practice in medical informatics. He is the co-developer of the Rothman Index, a patient acuity score that helps clinicians prevent unnoticed patient deterioration, reduce unplanned transfers to the ICU and reduce overall hospital mortality rates. Recently, his research has also been applied to patient risk stratification for sepsis and COVID-19.
Dr. Rothman holds a PhD in Physical Chemistry and has had over 30 years’ experience in data analysis and mathematical modeling. Over the last fifteen years, following the avoidable death of his mother in a hospital, he has focused on leveraging the data stored in hospitals’ medical records to improve the quality of care.
Prior to this work, he was an independent consultant. He spent 18 years at IBM, part of which was in the AI department at the TJ Watson Research Labs. His pro bono work has included publications on analyses relating to: the impact of the introduction of a birthing room for guide dog puppies on live puppy birth rates, and finding the trail of Coronado’s 1520 expedition in the US southwest based on principal component analysis of lead isotope distributions from samples of lead shot. Dr. Rothman is the author of research papers published in: BMJ Open, J of Biomedical Informatics, J of Critical Care, Critical Care Medicine, Hospital Pediatrics and J of Hospital Medicine, and has had six US and Canadian patents issued, based on healthcare-related modeling and machine learning algorithms.
Dr. Rothman notes, “Medical informatics has the potential of impacting the lives of anyone who interacts with the healthcare system, which is everyone. I am proud to join this distinguished community which is at the forefront of leveraging the great work of our healthcare providers by improving lives.”

About PeraHealth
PeraHealth is a SaaS software company that uses the Rothman Index to transform the clinical and financial efficiency of healthcare. The Rothman Index is the first algorithm that derives one simple score from the vast amount of data in the electronic medical record to create a picture of any patient’s condition over time – any age, any disease, any care setting. It is the only algorithm proven to reduce mortality in practice. Other results include reducing length of stay and readmissions. Our customers are leading hospitals and clinicians who need to identify patients at risk of rapid decline, make decisions about transfer and discharge, predict the risk of severe infection, and improve the overall efficiency and quality of care.
