1,400+ Oncology Nursing Professionals Convene at 8th Annual Conference to Explore Contemporary Topics in Oncology Care
Over 1,415 oncology nurses in all roles found inspiration and connection while expanding their knowledge in disease-specific and supportive care topics on March 17-19 at the 2023 Oncology Nurse Advisor (ONA) Summit. The live virtual continuing education conference was hosted by Oncology Nurse Advisor—the Haymarket Medical Network (HMN) online and print resource for the oncology nurse community—in partnership with Haymarket Medical Education, Fox Chase Cancer Center and Temple University.
Themed “Thriving Under Pressure: Collaborative Oncology Nurses Shine” in recognition of the challenges of the “new normal” of oncology care, the Summit provided oncology nurses in all roles and varying work schedules the opportunity to optimize their educational experience, network with their colleagues, and earn up to 15 continuing education contact hours certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). To expand access to this valuable education post-Summit, select sessions will be available as on-demand learning on myCME, HMN’s leading global medical education distribution platform.
“With a 37% increase in attendance vs. last year, we are thrilled with the ever growing interest in the ONA Summit,” said Jim Burke, General Manager, Haymarket Medical Education. “It is a testament to Haymarket’s ability to leverage our relationships with partners, grantors, and intra-company resources to create and deliver timely and relevant continuing medical education that meets the needs of healthcare professionals—whether through live virtual events or on-demand via myCME.”
The Summit’s unique intra-professional focus included relevant content with sessions that offered foundational, emerging, practical, and most importantly immediately actionable content. Popular sessions addressed topics including Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Breast Cancer, MDS/MDN, Gastrointestinal and Colorectal Cancers, Bladder Cancer, Myelofibrosis, Gynecologic Cancers, and LGBTQ+ Issues in cancer care.
Sessions were designed to be relevant to all oncology nursing roles, including nurse navigators and advanced practice nursing providers (MSN, APN, and NP) who specialize in the care of patients with cancer, as well as nurses from other subspecialties who care for patients throughout their disease trajectory. Expert advisors for the Summit included representatives for each of the nursing roles, including: Anna L. Rodriguez, MSN, MHA, RN, OCN®, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Nursing and Patient Care Services, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Tracy Wyant, DNP, AOCN®, CHPN®, GERO-BC, EBP-C, CPPS, Managing Director at the American Cancer Society, Heather T. Mackey, DNP, MSN, RN, ANP-BC, AOCN®, Senior Director of the Prevent Cancer Foundation, and Jean Sellers, RN, MSN, Executive Director at the North Carolina Oncology Navigator Association.
In addition to the partnership with Fox Chase Cancer Center, 2023 ONA Summit Sponsors included Regeneron (Platinum Sponsor) and AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals (Silver Sponsor). Educational grant support was provided in part by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, Bristol Myers Squibb, Daiichi Sankyo, Exelixis, Inc., GlaxoSmithKline, Merck & Co., and Novocure. Creation of the virtual environment and production of the 2023 ONA Summit was provided by Haymarket’s sister organization, National Association for Continuing Education (NACE) Studios located in Sunrise, Florida.
