Yale New Haven Health extends partnership with PeraHealth

CHARLOTTE, N.C.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–To improve patient outcomes and further its mission of commitment to innovation and excellence in patient care, longstanding PeraHealth customer Yale New Haven Health (YNHH) has established a new multi-year partnership to continue applying the Rothman Index for global clinical surveillance.

As part of the new agreement, Yale New Haven Health has officially launched Rothman Index MOBILE (RI MOBILE), the new mobile platform that allows clinicians access to the Rothman Index from their mobile devices. RI MOBILE untethers clinicians from the EMR computer screen and provides remote access to patient surveillance tools that track patient trends and alerts. RI MOBILE enables on-the-go clinicians to identify at-risk patients earlier for prioritized rounding and actively notifies clinicians with patient deterioration alerts.

Yale New Haven Health has been a key innovation partner for PeraHealth, testing and validating new applications of the Rothman Index. Its early implementation of RI MOBILE technology proved to dramatically impact clinical efficiency, reducing time to respond to patient deterioration. In addition, an RI MOBILE implementation trial showed that 99% of patient condition alerts to which emergency response SWAT nurses reacted resulted in a patient assessment, and 14% of those warnings resulted in an intervention that a patient may not have otherwise gotten without the mobile alert.

The Rothman Index is the only proven algorithm that derives one simple score from the vast amount of data in the electronic medical record to create a picture of any patient’s condition over time – any age, any disease, any unit. It can detect patient deterioration hours or even days earlier than existing scores and systems.

“For the last six years, the Rothman Index has been an important part of our clinical workflow and performance improvement strategy,” says Stephen Allegretto, YNHH’s Senior Vice President of Finance, Lawrence and Memorial Health. “We’re pleased to expand the latest Rothman Index MOBILE technology to help our clinicians identify patient deterioration sooner and improve patient outcomes.”

Use of the Rothman Index by YNHH is associated with positive outcomes including:

  • 26% year-over-year mortality reduction in adult patients with a major risk of mortality upon admission, and a 12% reduction in those with an extreme risk. On a second campus, a 30% mortality reduction in patients with a major risk of mortality (BMJ Quality & Safety, 2015)
  • 44% decrease in hospital-acquired sepsis cases accompanied by a 14% reduction in cost per case for comparable pre- and post Rothman Index implementation periods (Customer Analysis, 2016)
  • 29% mortality reduction in patients assigned a sepsis DRG (non-hospital acquired sepsis) accompanied by a 22%, 6%, and 15% reduction in cost per case for DRGs 870, 871, and 872, respectively (Customer Analysis, 2016)

“Yale New Haven Health has been a strategic partner and advocate of our technology for many years,” says Michael Rothman, PhD, Co-founder and Chief Science Officer, PeraHealth. “We are very pleased to see our RI MOBILE technology in the hands of clinicians, allowing them to access critical patient condition information from anywhere in the hospital.”

About PeraHealth

PeraHealth is a SaaS software company that uses the Rothman Index to transform the clinical and financial efficiency of healthcare. The Rothman Index is the only algorithm that derives one simple score from the vast amount of data in the electronic medical record to create a picture of any patient’s condition over time – any age, any disease, any unit. It is the only algorithm proven to reduce mortality in practice. Other results include reducing length of stay and readmissions. Our customers are leading hospitals and clinicians who need to identify patients at risk of rapid decline, make decisions about transfer and discharge, predict the risk of severe infection, and improve the overall efficiency and quality of care.
