New single API integration lets any EHR service provider enable ADT, adherence data, and interoperability in every customer’s workflow
Particle Health, a developer-friendly API platform for bi-directional healthcare data exchange, today announced the availability of Particle for EHRs. Particle for EHRs is a new administrative API layer that allows electronic health record (EHR) and platform service providers to easily access and send patient data to their customers by integrating Particle’s API suite. Using Particle for EHRs, EHR companies can connect their healthcare provider clients to the three largest nationwide health information networks – Carequality, CommonWell, and eHealth Exchange – with one platform-wide API integration. The same integration also makes admission, discharge and transfer (ADT) feeds and pharmacy data available.
Particle for EHRs enables clinical end users, such as doctors, to quickly access and easily share patient health histories through their EHR. EHR companies that integrate with Particle for EHRs can reach beyond local clinical data at a single healthcare provider, and instead obtain the full scope of a patient’s care journey. This information is vital as it contains data from a wide spectrum of clinicians involved in a patient’s care across the U.S. Its record sharing capabilities will also allow providers in other care settings to access that information.
Historically, only the largest EHR vendors have been able to implement interoperability solutions, and only in a limited fashion, due to the complexity of integrating with even a single nationwide network. Particle for EHRs is the first tool to give EHR service providers, and other platforms that facilitate medical care, an opportunity to provide bi-directional record sharing for their provider clients. These EHR vendors and other platform services will benefit from new opportunities to go head-to-head with incumbents that lack comprehensive native integrations.
“With Particle for EHRs, we’re opening up API-driven connectivity to nationwide interoperability networks to an entirely new category of healthcare participants,” said Troy Bannister, CEO, Particle Health. “This builds off the success of Particle’s existing API for treating providers by adding capabilities that will allow technology organizations to extend our benefits to their many different clinician users. EHR vendors using Particle for EHRs will obtain ADT feeds, access pharmacy data, and connect to upcoming Qualified Health Information Networks (QHINs) without having to build across the TEFCA ecosystem.”
Organizations that implement Particle for EHRs will sign one contract with Particle, and can market interoperability as a feature of their platform. Their provider clients don’t need to sign additional contracts, as Particle for EHRs takes care of everything – including advanced record location services, network directory management, bidirectional data sharing APIs and processed, FHIR-native patient data.
“Now, with increased government mandates for providers to make all electronic health information available, EHR service providers are under increased pressure to make clinical data accessible by all,” explained Zach Weinberg, Particle Health investor, and former President and COO of Flatiron Health. “Particle for EHRs is a way for any EHR vendor to enable truly comprehensive interoperability – including bi-directional document sharing – virtually out of the box. This would have been awesome to have while I was with Flatiron.”
