GE HealthCare has announced its latest innovation in healthcare technology: CareIntellect for Oncology. This AI-powered application aims to streamline cancer care by consolidating patient data from disparate systems into a single, accessible view for clinicians. The application utilizes generative AI to summarize complex clinical notes, patient histories, and reports, providing a longitudinal view of disease progression and surfacing key data that could influence treatment decisions.
Designed to address the overwhelming amount of data that clinicians often have to navigate, CareIntellect for Oncology focuses on enabling faster, more informed interventions in cancer treatment. “CareIntellect is designed to help providers streamline access to critical patient information and surface key changes since the patient’s last visit,” says Dr. Taha Kass-Hout, Global Chief Science and Technology Officer at GE HealthCare. “By ensuring the provider has the right information at their fingertips, they can spend less time sifting through information and more time helping patients”.
The application will first target breast and prostate cancers, helping care teams track disease progression, assess treatment responses, and evaluate clinical trial eligibility. GE HealthCare claims this will alleviate the burden on clinicians by reducing the time spent manually searching and synthesizing patient data. In some cases, CareIntellect could condense what would typically be hours of data gathering into just minutes, helping to identify risks such as missed lab work or deviations from treatment protocols.
Tampa General Hospital and UT Southwestern Medical Center have signed on as early evaluators of CareIntellect for Oncology, with integration already underway. The hospitals will use the tool to improve how care teams transition from analysis to action, particularly in identifying eligible patients for clinical trials—a time-consuming process that often overwhelms oncologists due to the volume of new research and trial information.
According to GE HealthCare, the platform aims to simplify the adoption of new healthcare applications by reducing the need for costly and time-consuming integration of individual products. Built on a common cloud-based infrastructure, CareIntellect allows healthcare providers to onboard new capabilities more efficiently. This modular approach could significantly accelerate digital transformation in healthcare, allowing hospitals to focus more on clinical outcomes rather than IT logistics.
Dr. Peter Chang, Senior Vice President and Chief Transformation Officer at Tampa General Hospital, expressed enthusiasm for the potential of CareIntellect to streamline clinical workflows. “We were impressed by how quickly GE HealthCare was able to design the application to include breast cancer in a matter of weeks. We look forward to using the AI-enabled functionality to help clinicians spend time where it matters most—delivering outstanding patient care” .
The application is expected to become available to U.S. healthcare providers in 2025, with future expansion into Canada, the UK, and Ireland.
