Detection Technology, a Finland-based leader in X-ray detector solutions, introduced a comprehensive portfolio of flat panel X-ray detectors at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) 2024 exhibition. The company claims that its expanded lineup, encompassing 20 detector solutions, aims to advance medical imaging through improved performance in diverse applications such as image-guided surgery, wireless radiography, fluoroscopy, oncology, and dental imaging.

The detectors, according to the company, combine high frame rates, low-dose imaging, and wide dynamic range to deliver superior image quality. Tuomas Holma, Director of Product Management at Detection Technology, described the portfolio as “versatile” and tailored to meet the evolving demands of modern healthcare.

Innovative Flat Panel Detectors

The newly launched portfolio includes both amorphous silicon (a-Si) and IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) technology-based detectors, which the company says are optimized for specific medical uses. Examples highlighted by Holma include:

X-Panel 2121a FDM: A 200 µm pixel size a-Si-TFT design.

X-Panel 2323z FDM: Featuring a 148 µm pixel IGZO-TFT design, aimed at replacing traditional image intensifiers.

X-Panel 3030z FDM-TG-X: Positioned at the high end of the surgical imaging range, this model incorporates a 99 µm pixel configuration and a 10 G Ethernet interface to deliver fast imaging at 40 fps (1×1).

For fluoroscopy applications, the company is offering models such as the X-Panel 4343a FRM and X-Panel 4343z FDM, both featuring 140 µm pixel designs and the ability to operate at 40 fps (1×1).

In addition to surgical imaging and fluoroscopy, the portfolio extends to detectors for dental imaging, oncology, and portable digital radiography. The company emphasizes that these solutions are engineered to deliver exceptional imaging performance while maintaining a low radiation dose for patients.

Off-the-Shelf CT Detector Solutions

Beyond flat panel detectors, Detection Technology is showcasing its CT (Computed Tomography) detector solutions, designed for various medical modalities. The range includes:

X-ACE 16 HD: Described as a “value-oriented solution.”

X-ACE 32: Targeted at mainstream imaging applications.

X-Tile: A high-performance option for advanced volumetric CT systems.

According to the company, these CT solutions are designed to lower radiation doses, enable faster scans, and enhance patient experience, offering hospitals and healthcare providers a “reliable, one-stop solution built on trusted platforms.”

Future of Imaging: Photon-Counting CT

Detection Technology is also investing in the development of photon-counting CT (PCCT) detectors, which it describes as a transformative leap in medical imaging. Photon-counting technology promises to deliver unprecedented detail and accuracy, providing clinicians with deeper insights and potentially improving patient outcomes.

“Photon-counting CT represents a groundbreaking advancement that will empower clinicians with deeper insights and elevate patient care to new levels,” the company stated.

While specific timelines for commercial availability were not disclosed, the company’s exploration of PCCT aligns with broader industry trends toward precision imaging and advanced diagnostics.

Presence at RSNA 2024

Detection Technology is presenting its expanded portfolio at RSNA 2024, held in Chicago from December 1–4. Attendees can explore the company’s offerings at Booth 4133 in the South Hall, Level 3.
