Avel eCare, a leading provider of clinician-to-clinician telemedicine services, has announced its acquisition of Amwell Psychiatric Care (APC), a division of Amwell® (NYSE:AMWL). According to Avel eCare, this acquisition enhances its Behavioral Health services and strengthens its ability to meet increasing mental health needs across the United States. The move also extends the company’s geographic reach to over 45 states and adds some of the nation’s largest health systems to its customer base.
Strengthening Behavioral Health Offerings
Avel eCare claims that incorporating APC into its operations will enhance its existing Behavioral Health services by offering faster transitions for patients in mental health crises to connect with trained mental health professionals. With APC’s expertise and resources, Avel seeks to deliver more efficient and effective care to a broader population.
Doug Duskin, CEO of Avel eCare, described the acquisition as an alignment of missions aimed at improving healthcare delivery. “Together, we are equipping hospitals, health systems, and communities with the tools to address critical healthcare challenges more efficiently and effectively, not just in Behavioral Health but across a broad spectrum of needs,” Duskin said.
Amwell’s Chairman and CEO, Dr. Ido Schoenberg, expressed confidence in Avel eCare’s ability to build on APC’s foundation. “Their expertise in telehealth and shared commitment to innovation make them the ideal organization to carry forward this important work,” he stated. Schoenberg also highlighted the potential for future collaboration between Amwell and Avel eCare.
Addressing Mental Health Challenges Nationwide
The acquisition comes amid growing concerns over mental health in the United States, where nearly one in five adults experiences mental illness annually. Access to care remains a critical challenge, particularly in rural and underserved areas. According to Avel eCare, its expanded telehealth network will help bridge these gaps by connecting patients with mental health professionals, even in remote locations.
Telemedicine is increasingly viewed as a solution to the barriers of stigma, distance, and provider shortages that prevent many individuals from receiving timely mental health support. By integrating APC’s services, Avel eCare aims to further extend these benefits to populations nationwide.
